How to Build a Concrete Sleeper Retaining Wall in Mitchell Shire

Retaining walls are one of the most common landscaping projects across Mitchell Shire. Whether you're dealing with a sloped block in Wallan, a terraced garden in Kilmore, or a drainage issue in Broadford, a concrete sleeper retaining wall is one of the most durable and cost-effective solutions available.

This guide walks you through everything — from choosing your sleeper finish to getting the drainage right — so you can plan your project with confidence.

Why Concrete Sleepers?

Concrete sleepers have largely replaced timber sleepers for retaining walls in residential and semi-rural properties. Here's why:

  • Longevity — concrete doesn't rot, warp or get attacked by termites. A well-built concrete sleeper wall will last 40–50 years with minimal maintenance.
  • Strength — concrete sleepers handle significant lateral soil pressure, making them suitable for walls up to 1.2m high (and higher with engineering).
  • Appearance — modern concrete sleepers come in a range of finishes that look far better than raw grey concrete.
  • Cost — compared to natural stone or brick, concrete sleepers are significantly more affordable for the same structural performance.

Choosing Your Sleeper Finish

We stock five concrete sleeper finishes at our Wallan yard:

Plain Grey

The most economical option. Clean, modern look that suits contemporary homes and commercial applications. Available in 80mm and 100mm thickness.

Charcoal

A darker version of the plain finish. Popular for modern landscaping where a stronger visual contrast is wanted against light-coloured paving or garden beds.

Blockface

A textured finish that mimics the look of stacked stone blocks. Suits traditional and heritage-style properties, and blends well with natural garden settings.

Stackstone

A rougher, more natural stone texture. Popular in rural and semi-rural properties around Wallan, Broadford and Seymour where a more organic look is preferred.

Woodgrain

A timber-look finish that gives the warmth of wood without the maintenance. Works well in garden settings where you want a natural aesthetic but need the durability of concrete.

Understanding H Posts

H posts are the galvanised steel uprights that the sleepers slot into. Getting the right post type for your application is critical.

100UC vs 150UC

The number refers to the flange width of the universal column (UC) section:

  • 100UC — suitable for walls up to approximately 900mm high under normal soil conditions
  • 150UC — required for taller walls, heavier soil loads, or where the wall is retaining fill rather than undisturbed ground

When in doubt, go heavier. The cost difference between 100UC and 150UC is modest compared to the cost of a wall failure.

Post Types

Each UC size comes in four configurations:

  • H post (standard) — for straight runs
  • C post — for corners where the wall turns 90°
  • 45° corner — for angled corners
  • 90° corner — for square corners where two wall faces meet

Plan your post types before ordering. Count your straight runs, corners and any angled sections.

Post Depth

As a general rule, H posts should be embedded in concrete to a depth equal to one-third of the total post length. For a 900mm wall, you'd typically use a 2.4m post with 800mm in the ground.

Drainage — the Most Important Part

Poor drainage is the number one cause of retaining wall failure. Water pressure behind a wall multiplies the load on the structure dramatically.

Every concrete sleeper retaining wall should include:

  • Ag pipe (agricultural drainage pipe) laid at the base of the wall behind the sleepers, sloping to an outlet
  • Geofabric wrapped around the ag pipe and gravel to prevent soil migration into the drainage layer
  • Gravel backfill (20mm crushed rock) behind the sleepers to allow water to drain freely to the ag pipe

We stock 100mm socketed slotted ag pipe, geofabric rolls and drainage gravel at our Wallan yard.

Sleeper Lengths and Thicknesses

Our concrete sleepers are available in the following configurations:

  • Thickness: 80mm and 100mm
  • Lengths: 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m, 2.0m, 2.4m, 3.0m

For most residential retaining walls in Mitchell Shire, 2.4m sleepers are the most common length. Longer sleepers reduce the number of vertical joints in the wall, which improves appearance and slightly reduces installation time.

What Does a Concrete Sleeper Retaining Wall Cost?

Pricing depends on wall height, length, sleeper finish and post type. As a rough guide:

  • Sleeper cost is per unit, based on length and thickness
  • H post cost is per post, based on UC size and type
  • Drainage materials (ag pipe, geofabric, gravel) are additional

All our prices are GST-inclusive. For an accurate quote, measure your wall length and height, note any corners, and contact us — we'll help you work out quantities and total cost.

Do You Need a Permit?

In Victoria, retaining walls over 1m high generally require a building permit. Check with Mitchell Shire Council before starting work on any wall over 1m. For walls under 1m, no permit is typically required, but it's worth confirming with your local council.
