60mm Galvanised Steel Posts: The Right Post for Low Retaining Walls and Garden Edges

Not every retaining wall needs a 100UC or 150UC post. For low garden walls, raised garden beds, and property edging up to about 600mm high, a 60mm galvanised steel post is the right — and most cost-effective — choice.

At Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply, we stock 60mm galvanised steel posts in the lengths needed for low concrete sleeper retaining walls across the Wallan and Mitchell Shire area.

What Are 60mm Steel Posts?

60mm steel posts are round or square hollow section (SHS) galvanised steel posts, 60mm in diameter or width. They're hot-dip galvanised for corrosion resistance and designed to be set in concrete with concrete sleepers slotted in alongside them.

Unlike the larger 100UC and 150UC channel posts (which have a C-shaped profile to accept sleepers), 60mm posts are used with sleepers that butt up against the post face. They're simpler, lighter, and more economical for low walls.

When to Use 60mm Posts

60mm posts are appropriate for:

  • Garden edging walls up to 300–400mm high (1–2 sleeper courses)
  • Raised garden beds where the wall is decorative rather than structural
  • Low property boundaries where the height difference is minimal
  • Driveway edges and path borders

For walls over 600mm high, or where the wall is retaining significant soil loads, upgrade to 100UC or 150UC posts. If in doubt, consult a structural engineer — particularly for walls over 1.0m in the Mitchell Shire area, where council requirements may apply.

Post Lengths and Embedment

The general rule for retaining wall posts is:

Post length = Wall height above ground + minimum embedment depth

For a low wall with 300mm above ground, you need at least 600mm embedment — so a minimum 900mm post. For a 600mm wall, use a 1200mm post minimum.

We stock 60mm posts in lengths to suit standard low-wall applications. Check current stock when ordering.

Setting 60mm Posts

  1. Mark post positions at 1.8m–2.4m centres along the wall line.
  2. Dig holes to the required depth, 150–200mm diameter.
  3. Set posts in concrete, checking plumb in two directions.
  4. Allow concrete to cure for at least 24 hours before placing sleepers.
  5. Place sleepers against the post face, stacking courses as required.

For very low walls (1 course), you can sometimes set posts in compacted gravel rather than concrete — but concrete is always more reliable.

Pairing with Concrete Sleepers

60mm posts work with all our concrete sleeper types:

  • Plain Grey
  • Charcoal Plain
  • Charcoal Stackstone
  • Blockface Pattern
  • Woodgrain Pattern

All sleepers are 80mm thick and available in 1.8m, 2.0m, and 2.4m lengths.
