150UB Galvanised Steel Posts: Heavy-Duty Retaining Wall Posts Explained
150UB posts are the heavy-duty option for concrete sleeper retaining walls where extra strength is needed. Here''s when to specify a 150UB over a 150UC, what sizes are available, and how they''re used in retaining wall construction.
When you're building a concrete sleeper retaining wall that needs to handle serious loads — high walls, surcharge from vehicles or structures, or difficult soil conditions — the post selection matters enormously. At Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply, we stock 150UB galvanised steel posts for applications where standard 100UC or 150UC channel posts aren't enough.
What Is a 150UB Post?
A 150UB (Universal Beam, 150mm nominal depth) is a hot-dip galvanised I-beam section used as a retaining wall post. Unlike the C-shaped channel profile of UC posts (which have lips to accept sleepers), a UB post is an I-beam — two flanges connected by a web. Concrete sleepers are placed between the flanges, which act as guides.
The UB profile is significantly stiffer than a UC of the same nominal size, making it the right choice for high-load applications.
150UB vs 150UC: What's the Difference?
| Feature | 150UC | 150UB |
|---|---|---|
| Profile | C-channel (lipped) | I-beam |
| Sleeper fit | Slots into channel lips | Sits between flanges |
| Stiffness | High | Very high |
| Typical use | Walls up to ~1.8m | High walls, heavy surcharge |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
For most residential retaining walls in the Wallan and Mitchell Shire area, 150UC posts are sufficient. 150UB posts are specified when:
- The wall is over 1.8m high
- There is significant surcharge load (vehicles, structures, or heavy fill above the wall)
- The soil is expansive clay or has poor drainage (common in parts of Mitchell Shire)
- An engineer has specified 150UB in the design
When Do You Need an Engineer?
In Victoria, retaining walls over 1.0m high generally require a building permit, and walls over 1.5m typically require an engineer's design. If you're building a wall that needs 150UB posts, you almost certainly need an engineer involved. The engineer will specify the post size, spacing, embedment depth, and drainage requirements.
We can supply whatever the engineer specifies — bring the spec sheet to our yard and we'll confirm what we have in stock.
Post Lengths
150UB posts are available in lengths to suit the required wall height plus embedment. As a general guide:
- Embedment depth = at least 40% of the total post length
- For a 1.5m wall: minimum 1.0m embedment → 2.5m post
- For a 2.0m wall: minimum 1.3m embedment → 3.3m post

Drainage Is Critical
For any wall using 150UB posts — which are typically high or heavily loaded walls — drainage behind the wall is essential. Without drainage, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall and can cause failure regardless of post size. Always include:
- Geofabric drainage cloth behind the wall
- Drainage pipe (ag pipe) at the base of the wall
- Gravel backfill behind the sleepers
