Gate Latches and Drop Bolts: Choosing the Right Hardware for Your Fence Gate

A gate is only as good as its hardware. Here''s how to choose between a D-latch and a drop bolt for your fence gate — and when you need both.

Gate Latches and Drop Bolts: Choosing the Right Hardware for Your Fence Gate

Gate hardware is one of those things that's easy to get wrong. Buy the wrong latch and you'll be back at the hardware store within a year — or worse, your gate will swing open on its own and let the dog out. At Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply, we stock two essential pieces of gate hardware: the D-Latch (Gal) and the Drop Bolt 450mm.

Here's how to choose the right hardware for your gate.

D-Latch (Gal): The Standard Gate Latch

A D-latch (also called a D-handle latch or thumb latch) is the standard latch for pedestrian gates. It consists of a D-shaped handle on the outside of the gate and a latch bar that drops into a keep on the gate post. Lifting the D-handle releases the latch; letting go allows it to drop back into the keep.

Why Galvanised?

The "Gal" in D-Latch (Gal) means hot-dip galvanised — the latch is coated in zinc to resist corrosion. In the Wallan and Mitchell Shire climate, where gates are exposed to rain, morning dew, and temperature extremes, galvanised hardware lasts significantly longer than zinc-plated or painted alternatives. We only stock galvanised hardware for this reason.

When to Use a D-Latch

  • Pedestrian gates (single gates up to about 1.2m wide)
  • Side access gates between house and fence
  • Garden gates
  • Any gate that needs to be opened from both sides

The D-latch can be operated from both sides of the gate, making it ideal for gates that are used regularly by people entering and exiting.

Installation Tips

  • Fix the latch body to the gate at a comfortable height — typically 900–1000mm from the ground
  • Fix the keep to the gate post, aligned with the latch bar
  • Adjust the keep position so the latch drops cleanly without binding
  • Apply a small amount of grease to the latch mechanism annually

Drop Bolt 450mm: Securing Double Gates and Inactive Leaves

A drop bolt (also called a cane bolt or flush bolt) is a vertical bolt that drops into a hole in the ground (or a socket in the paving) to hold a gate in the open or closed position. Our 450mm drop bolt is designed for double gates and wide single gates.

When to Use a Drop Bolt

  • Double gates — one gate leaf is held stationary with the drop bolt while the other is opened and closed with the latch
  • Wide single gates — to hold the gate open when needed (e.g. for vehicle access)
  • Any gate that needs to be secured in the open position

Without a drop bolt on a double gate, both leaves will swing freely — making it impossible to latch one leaf against the other. The drop bolt fixes one leaf in place so the other can latch against it.

Installation Tips

  • The drop bolt fixes to the face of the gate, typically at the bottom
  • Drill a 25–30mm hole in the ground (or install a socket in paving) to receive the bolt
  • The bolt should drop cleanly into the hole with a firm push
  • For paved areas, use a ground socket rather than drilling into the paving

Using Both Together

For a double gate, you'll typically need:

  • 1 × D-Latch — on the active (opening) leaf
  • 1 × Drop Bolt — on the inactive (stationary) leaf

This combination gives you a gate that can be opened from both sides, with one leaf held securely in place.
