Bugle Batten Timber Screws: Which Size Do You Need for Fence Palings?
Using the wrong screw for fence palings is one of the most common DIY fencing mistakes. Here''s how to choose the right bugle batten screw size for your project — and why galvanised screws are non-negotiable for treated pine.
The screws you use to fix your fence palings matter more than most people realise. Use the wrong type and they'll rust, stain the timber, and work loose within a few years. Use the wrong length and you won't get enough penetration into the rail to hold the paling securely. At Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply, we stock bugle batten timber screws in four sizes — 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 125mm — to cover every fencing application.
What Are Bugle Batten Screws?
Bugle batten screws are self-drilling timber screws with a bugle (countersunk) head and a coarse thread designed for fixing timber to timber. The bugle head sits flush with or just below the timber surface, and the coarse thread provides strong pull-out resistance in softwood like treated pine.
They're called "batten screws" because they were originally designed for fixing roof battens — but they're equally well suited to fence palings, rails, decking, and general timber construction.
Why Galvanised Screws Are Essential for Treated Pine
Treated pine is impregnated with CCA (copper chrome arsenate) preservative. This chemical is highly corrosive to standard bright steel screws — they'll rust within months, leaving orange stains on the timber and eventually failing structurally.
For treated pine, you must use:
- Hot-dip galvanised (HDG) screws, or
- Type 316 stainless steel screws
Our bugle batten screws are hot-dip galvanised, making them compatible with treated pine and suitable for exterior use in the Wallan and Mitchell Shire climate.
Which Size Do You Need?
50mm — Capping and Light Fixings
50mm screws are used for fixing fence capping (75×25mm) to palings, and for other light-duty applications where you don't need deep penetration. They're also useful for fixing thin battens and trim.
75mm — Standard Paling Fixings
75mm is the most common size for fixing 12mm palings to 50mm rails. The screw passes through the 12mm paling and penetrates approximately 60mm into the rail — well within the recommended minimum penetration of 2× the fastener diameter.
This is the size most people need for a standard paling fence.
100mm — Heavy Palings and Plinth Fixings
100mm screws are used for fixing thicker palings (19mm or 25mm), fixing plinths to posts, or anywhere you need extra penetration depth. They're also useful for fixing rails to posts.
125mm — Rail-to-Post and Structural Fixings
125mm screws are for structural applications — fixing rails to posts, fixing gate frames, or anywhere maximum penetration and pull-out resistance is needed.
How Many Screws Do You Need?
For a standard paling fence using 75mm screws, with 2 screws per paling per rail (3 rails):
Screws per paling = 6
For a 30m fence with 150mm-wide palings (approximately 200 palings): 200 × 6 = 1,200 screws
Our screws are sold in packs of 500, so you'd need 3 packs for this example. Always buy a little extra — screws are cheap, and running out mid-job is frustrating.
