Colorbond Fence Post Double Caps: A Small Detail That Matters

When you're building a Colorbond fence, it's easy to focus on the big items — posts, rails, sheets — and overlook the small finishing details. But post caps are one detail you really shouldn't skip. An uncapped C-Channel post is an open tube pointing straight up at the sky, collecting rainwater and debris with every shower.

At Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply, we stock Colorbond fence post double caps — the correct cap for standard C-Channel fence posts.

What Is a Double Cap?

A double cap (also called a twin cap or double post cap) is a plastic or steel cap designed to fit over the top of a C-Channel fence post. The "double" refers to the fact that it covers both lips of the C-Channel profile, sealing the entire top of the post.

Single caps only cover one side of the post — they're used on end posts where one side of the channel faces the fence and the other is exposed. Double caps are used on all intermediate posts where both sides of the channel are in use.

Why Post Caps Matter

Preventing Water Ingress

C-Channel posts are hollow. Without a cap, rainwater runs straight into the post, sits at the bottom, and accelerates corrosion from the inside out. Even though Colorbond posts are galvanised internally, prolonged water pooling will eventually cause rust — particularly at the base of the post where it meets the concrete footing.

Keeping Out Debris and Insects

An uncapped post is an open invitation for spiders, wasps, and other insects to nest inside. It also collects leaves, dirt, and other debris that can hold moisture against the steel.

Finishing the Fence

Capped posts look finished. Uncapped posts look like the job isn't done. It's a small detail, but it makes a visible difference to the overall appearance of the fence.

How to Fit Post Caps

Post caps simply press onto the top of the post. No tools required — they're a friction fit. If the cap feels loose, a small bead of silicone sealant on the inside of the cap before fitting will hold it in place and provide an additional water seal.

Fit caps after all rails and sheets are in place, as the last step of the fence installation.

How Many Do You Need?

You need one double cap per intermediate post. For end posts and corner posts, you may need single caps on the exposed side — check what's required for your specific post configuration.

Number of double caps = Number of intermediate posts

For a 30m fence with posts at 2.4m centres: approximately 12 intermediate posts = 12 double caps.

Colour Options

Post caps are available in standard Colorbond colours to match your fence. The most common colours in the Wallan area are Monument, Woodland Grey, and Ironstone.
