Colorbond Fence Sheets: Trimfort vs Zigzag Profile Guide
Not all Colorbond fence sheets are the same. Here''s how to choose between Trimfort and Zigzag profiles, what sizes are available, and how to calculate how many sheets you need for your fence in Wallan or Mitchell Shire.
Colorbond steel fencing is the most popular fencing choice in Australia — and for good reason. It's low maintenance, long-lasting, and available in a wide range of colours to suit any home. But when it comes to choosing fence sheets, there's an important decision to make: Trimfort or Zigzag profile?
At Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply, we stock Colorbond fence sheets in both profiles, in multiple heights and the full range of Colorbond colours.
Trimfort vs Zigzag: What's the Difference?
Both profiles are made from Colorbond steel and perform identically in terms of durability and weather resistance. The difference is purely visual — the shape of the corrugation.
Trimfort Profile
Trimfort has a classic, symmetrical corrugation with a rounded, flowing profile. It's the most widely used fence sheet profile in Australia and gives a clean, traditional Colorbond look. If you want your fence to look like every other Colorbond fence in the street — in a good way — Trimfort is the choice.
Best for: Standard residential fencing, matching existing Colorbond fences, traditional look.
Zigzag Profile
Zigzag has a sharper, more angular corrugation. The crisp lines give it a more contemporary, architectural feel. It's increasingly popular in newer estates and modern homes across the northern Melbourne growth corridor — including Beveridge, Donnybrook, and Wallan.
Best for: Modern homes, contemporary designs, new estates, architectural projects.
Available Heights
We stock Colorbond fence sheets in standard heights:
- 1.8m — the most common residential height
- 2.1m — for additional privacy or security
Both heights are available in Trimfort and Zigzag profiles.
Colorbond Colours Available
We stock sheets in the full Colorbond colour range, including:
Surfmist, Shale Grey, Dune, Paperbark, Classic Cream, Pale Eucalypt, Wilderness, Cottage Green, Pale Terra Cotta, Manor Red, Headland, Windspray, Basalt, Ironstone, Monument, Night Sky, Woodland Grey, Jasper, Terrain, Gully, Mangrove, and Cove.
Monument, Woodland Grey, and Ironstone are the most popular choices in the Wallan area.
How Many Sheets Do You Need?
Colorbond fence sheets have a cover width of approximately 820mm (Trimfort) or similar (Zigzag). To calculate the number of sheets:
Number of sheets = Total fence length (mm) ÷ Cover width (mm), rounded up
For a 30m fence using Trimfort sheets (820mm cover width): 30,000 ÷ 820 = 36.6 → 37 sheets
Always add 5–10% for waste, cuts, and damaged sheets.
What Else Do You Need for a Colorbond Fence?
Colorbond fence sheets don't stand alone — you'll need:
- C-Channel posts (set in concrete at 2.4m centres)
- Fence rails (top, mid, and bottom — typically 3 rails for a 1.8m fence)
- Post caps (to keep water out of the posts)
- Concrete for setting posts
- Tek screws for fixing sheets to rails
We stock all of these at our Wallan yard.
Colorbond vs Timber: Which Is Right for You?
Colorbond is lower maintenance than timber — it doesn't rot, warp, or need painting. It's also more resistant to fire, which is an important consideration in the Mitchell Shire bushfire overlay areas around Wallan, Kilmore, and Broadford. Timber fencing has a warmer, more traditional look and can be painted any colour.
For most new builds in the Wallan area, Colorbond is the practical choice. For heritage properties or where a traditional look is required, treated pine paling fencing is the better option.
