Fencing & Timber FAQ — Wallan, Kilmore & Mitchell Shire | Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply

Question 1

Where can I buy treated pine fence palings in Wallan?

Accepted Answer

Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply at 22 Commercial Drive, Wallan VIC 3756 stocks H3 treated pine fence palings in 100mm and 150mm widths, available in 1.5m, 1.8m, 2.1m and 2.4m lengths. Open Mon–Fri 7am–4pm, Sat 7am–1pm. Call 0431 193 102.

Question 2

What is the difference between H3 and H4 treated pine?

Accepted Answer

H3 treated pine is suitable for above-ground outdoor use where it is exposed to weather — ideal for fence palings, rails and capping. H4 treated pine is rated for in-ground contact and is used for fence posts and sleepers that go into the soil. Using H3 timber in-ground will cause it to rot prematurely; always use H4 for any timber that contacts the ground.

Question 3

What timber fence posts do you stock?

Accepted Answer

We stock mixed red hardwood posts (125×75mm) in lengths from 1.8m to 3.6m, cypress pine posts in 125×75mm and 125×125mm profiles, and treated pine fence rails in 75×50mm section. All posts are priced per piece with trade pricing available for contractors.

Question 4

What is the difference between hardwood and cypress pine fence posts?

Accepted Answer

Hardwood posts (mixed red hardwood 125×75mm) offer exceptional natural durability and strength for boundary fencing. Cypress pine posts are naturally termite-resistant and lighter, making them a popular choice for residential fencing in areas with termite pressure. Both are available without chemical treatment.

Question 5

What is a fence plinth and do I need one?

Accepted Answer

A fence plinth (150×25mm treated pine) sits at the base of your fence between the posts, protecting the bottom of your palings from ground contact, moisture and pests. It is strongly recommended for timber paling fences to extend the life of the fence and prevent rot at the base.

Question 6

What screws should I use for timber fence palings?

Accepted Answer

We recommend Macsim bugle batten screws (Class 3 galvanised) for fixing treated pine palings. Available in 50mm, 75mm, 100mm and 125mm lengths. The self-embedding bugle head sits flush without splitting the timber, and the Class 3 coating is rated for outdoor use with treated pine.

Question 7

How many palings do I need per metre of fence?

Accepted Answer

For 100mm palings with a 5mm gap, you need approximately 9 palings per metre. For 150mm palings with a 5mm gap, approximately 6 palings per metre. Our team can help you calculate quantities — call 0431 193 102 or add items to your online quote cart.

Question 8

What timber fence capping do you stock?

Accepted Answer

We stock treated pine fence capping in 75×25mm profile in 5.4m lengths. Capping is fixed to the top of your fence palings to protect the end grain from moisture and give the fence a neat, finished appearance.

Question 9

Do you sell timber fence brackets?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We stock galvanised steel timber fence brackets for attaching rails to posts. Using brackets instead of nailing through the post creates a stronger, more durable connection.

Question 10

Do you supply timber fencing materials to Kilmore, Broadford and Seymour?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We supply treated pine palings, rails, posts, capping and plinth to homeowners and contractors across Mitchell Shire including Kilmore, Broadford, Seymour, Wandong, Beveridge, Craigieburn and Donnybrook. Call 0431 193 102 for delivery pricing to your area.

Question 11

How long will a treated pine paling fence last?

Accepted Answer

A well-built treated pine paling fence using H3 palings, H4 posts, capping and a plinth board will typically last 15–25 years with minimal maintenance. The biggest factors are keeping the timber off the ground (plinth board), protecting the top of the palings (capping), and using quality galvanised fixings.

Question 12

What is the standard height for a timber paling fence?

Accepted Answer

The most common residential timber paling fence heights are 1.8m (standard boundary fence) and 1.5m (front yard or lower boundary). Some councils in Mitchell Shire allow up to 2.1m without a permit for side and rear boundaries. Check with Mitchell Shire Council for your specific property requirements.

Question 16

What size Colorbond posts do you stock?

Accepted Answer

We stock Colorbond 70mm C-channel fence posts in 2.4m, 2.7m and 3.0m lengths, square steel posts (SHS) in 50×50mm, 65×65mm, 75×75mm and 100×100mm profiles, and galvanised H Posts (100UC) in lengths from 1.8m to 3.6m.

Question 17

What is a Colorbond post extension used for?

Accepted Answer

A Colorbond post extension fits onto an existing C-channel post to raise the height of your fence — useful when upgrading from 1.8m to 2.1m panels or adding privacy screening to an existing fence.

Question 18

What is a concrete under-fence plinth?

Accepted Answer

A concrete under-fence plinth (2360mm × 50mm) sits beneath Colorbond fence panels between the posts, preventing the base of the fence from contacting the ground. This protects against moisture, pests and erosion, and creates a clean, level finish. Available in plain grey and charcoal.

Question 19

Do you sell Colorbond sheeting?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We stock genuine BlueScope Colorbond fence sheets in 1.8m and 2.1m heights, along with C-channel posts, rails, gate stiles, post extensions and all the hardware you need to complete a Colorbond fence.

Question 20

What is a concrete plinth and do I need one for my Colorbond fence?

Accepted Answer

A concrete plinth is a precast concrete strip that sits under your Colorbond fence panels, replacing the bottom rail and preventing the steel from contacting the ground. It eliminates the risk of rust at the base of the fence and keeps animals from getting under.

Question 21

How much does Colorbond fencing cost per metre?

Accepted Answer

Colorbond fencing material costs vary depending on the height, colour and accessories required. As a guide, a standard 1.8m Colorbond fence requires sheets, C-channel posts, rails and a concrete plinth. Contact us on 0431 193 102 for a current price per lineal metre.

Question 22

How many Colorbond fence sheets do I need per metre?

Accepted Answer

Standard Colorbond fence sheets are 762mm wide (effective cover). For a 1-metre run you need approximately 1.3 sheets. Our team can help you calculate quantities — call 0431 193 102 or add items to your online quote cart.

Question 23

Do you supply Colorbond fencing materials to Kilmore and Mitchell Shire?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we deliver Colorbond fencing supplies across Mitchell Shire including Kilmore, Broadford, Seymour, Wandong, Beveridge, Craigieburn and Donnybrook. Contact us on 0431 193 102 for a delivery quote.

Question 24

What is the difference between Trimclad, Metline and Metzag Colorbond profiles?

Accepted Answer

Trimclad has a traditional corrugated profile and is the most widely used Colorbond fence sheet. Metline has a flatter, more contemporary ribbed profile. Metzag has a distinctive angular rib profile. All three are genuine BlueScope steel products available in the same colour range.

Question 25

Do I need a permit to build a Colorbond fence in Victoria?

Accepted Answer

In Victoria, most standard boundary fences under 2.0m do not require a building permit. However, fences on corner lots, near easements, or in heritage overlays may have additional requirements. Always check with Mitchell Shire Council before starting work.

Question 26

What sizes do your concrete sleepers come in?

Accepted Answer

Our concrete sleepers are available in lengths from 1.2m to 3.0m and in two thicknesses — 80mm (standard) and 100mm (heavy duty). Sleepers up to 2.4m are available in both thicknesses; 2.7m and 3.0m lengths are available in 80mm only. We stock five finishes: Plain Grey, Plain Charcoal, Charcoal Stackstone, Blockface Pattern and Woodgrain Pattern.

Question 27

What is the difference between an H post and a C post?

Accepted Answer

An H post (universal column, UC section) has flanges on both sides and is used as a standard line post — sleepers slot into the flanges on each side. A C post (channel section, PFC) has a flange on one side only and is used at the end of a wall or at a corner where sleepers only run in one direction.

Question 28

When should I use a 150UC post instead of a 100UC post?

Accepted Answer

The 150UC (heavy duty) post is recommended for walls over 1.2m high, walls retaining heavy or saturated soil, or any wall where an engineer has specified a larger section. For walls under 1.2m in standard residential conditions, the 100UC post is generally sufficient.

Question 29

Do your concrete sleepers come with a warranty?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our concrete sleepers are manufactured to Australian standards and carry a structural warranty. Please contact us for full warranty terms and conditions.

Question 30

What finishes are available for concrete sleepers?

Accepted Answer

We stock five finishes: Plain Grey, Plain Charcoal, Charcoal Stackstone (natural stacked stone look), Blockface Pattern (exposed aggregate block look), and Woodgrain Pattern (timber look in concrete).

Question 31

What accessories do I need for a retaining wall?

Accepted Answer

A complete retaining wall installation typically requires: steel posts (H posts and C posts), concrete sleepers, geofabric drainage cloth, ag pipe (slotted drainage pipe), and concrete mix for setting posts. Our estimator tool can calculate quantities for you.

Question 32

What is the difference between blockface and stackstone concrete sleepers?

Accepted Answer

Blockface concrete sleepers have a bold exposed-aggregate block texture that mimics the look of stacked masonry blocks. Stackstone has a natural stacked stone surface texture that replicates the look of dry-stacked fieldstone.

Question 33

Where can I buy concrete sleepers near Wallan?

Accepted Answer

Wallan Fencing and Timber Supply at 22 Commercial Dr, Wallan VIC 3756 stocks a full range of concrete sleepers — plain grey, plain charcoal, blockface pattern, stackstone and woodgrain pattern — in lengths from 1.2m to 3.0m. Open Monday to Friday 7am–4pm and Saturday 7am–1pm. Call 0431 193 102.

Question 34

Do you need a permit to build a retaining wall in Victoria?

Accepted Answer

In Victoria, retaining walls over 1.0m in height generally require a building permit. Walls under 1.0m typically do not require a permit, but you should always check with your local council (Mitchell Shire Council for Wallan and surrounds). Walls over 1.0m may also require engineer certification.

Question 35

Do you sell treated pine timber sleepers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We stock treated pine sleepers in 200×75mm and 200×50mm profiles, available in 2.4m, 3.0m and 5.4m lengths. All sleepers are H4 treated for in-ground contact. Prices start from $18.99 incl. GST.

Question 36

What is geofabric and why do I need it for a retaining wall?

Accepted Answer

Geofabric (geotextile fabric) is a permeable fabric installed behind a retaining wall to separate the soil from the drainage aggregate. It prevents fine soil particles from migrating into the drainage layer and blocking the ag pipe, which would cause water to build up behind the wall and increase pressure on the sleepers and posts.

Question 37

What is ag pipe and where does it go in a retaining wall?

Accepted Answer

Ag pipe (agricultural drainage pipe) is a flexible perforated pipe installed at the base of the retaining wall behind the sleepers. It collects water that drains through the soil and geofabric and directs it away from the wall to a stormwater outlet or soakage point.

Question 38

How deep do I need to set retaining wall posts?

Accepted Answer

As a general rule, posts should be set to a depth of at least one-third of the total post length. For a 1.0m wall, a 2.4m post set 800mm deep is typical. For walls over 1.0m, deeper embedment and larger post sections (150UC) are required.

Question 39

Can I build a retaining wall myself or do I need a contractor?

Accepted Answer

Retaining walls under 1.0m are commonly built by experienced DIYers using concrete sleepers and steel posts. Walls over 1.0m require a building permit in Victoria and may need engineer certification — these are best left to a licensed contractor.
